A beautifully (and correctly) set table always sets the perfect tone for any dinner party. Avoid these 5 common mistakes and you can rest assured that your next soiree will be memorable for all the right reasons.
1. Using the Wrong Table Linens: Even a beautifully set table will lose it's lustre if the cloth is poor quality and barely reaches the edges or drapes awkwardly on the floor. The general rule of thumb is the tablecloth should sit 10-15 inches on all sides.
2. Tall Flower Arrangements: Avoid long stemmed flowers in tall vases, your guests can’t see each other—let alone talk. Bud vases are perfect for optimal height.
3. Thoughtless Lighting: Candlelight is an easy way to set the scene and adds elegance and drama. Low candlelight also makes for a more intimate dining atmosphere.
4. Mixing up the Glass and Napkin Placement: The napkin should go on the left with the forks. Glasses are always placed on the right side above the knives and spoons. A water glass is closer to the centre of the plate, and a wine glass is to its outside left.
5. Overcrowding the Table: Once considered trendy, now filling the table with superfluous items quickly becomes a nuisance. Ditch the animal figurines and embrace the space!
